APS Prepares for Flu Season

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Please review the information below and be aware of flu-like symptoms. We encourage you to keep your child home if they are experiencing symptoms.

‚Äč* fever, greater than 100º
* cough
* sore throat
* runny or stuffy nose
* headache
* chills
* fatigue
* body aches
* vomiting
* diarrhea

If your child experiences the symptoms above, please adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Keep students home if they have a fever over 100º. (VERY IMPORTANT)
  • Do not bring your child back to school until they are fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication.
  • Respond quickly if you get the call to pick up your child from school.
  • Have a plan in place for what you will do if your child needs to stay home for a week.
  • Who will take care of the sick members of the family? It is better to have one person caring for a sick person, than to expose the whole family.
  • Have the ill person stay away from main living areas, where they will expose other family members. (The flu is spread by droplet, it can travel as far as 8 feet and survive from a few minutes to 24 hours on an object.)
  • Discourage sharing of drinks and food
  • Encourage proper hand washing and cough etiquette.
  • Use hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available.
  • Check the school district website for updates.
  • If other family members in the household get the flu, watch children closely and keep home if symptoms begin to appear.
  • Check with your healthcare provide to see if your child should receive the flu vaccine.

Thank you for helping us in keeping Alamogordo Public Schools a safe and healthy environment to learn.
